Gemeente Rotterdam develops dozens of apps every year to serve its residents better. They recently started using the Mendix platform to develop applications faster and more efficiently.
Every time a piece of functionality is finished, it has to be deployed manually. For Gemeente Rotterdam that means deploying all that functionality repeatedly takes a lot of time.
At JAM-IT we follow the DevOps philosophy, which means we aim to make functionality available to the end user as quickly as possible. Until now that did not work out of the box when using the Mendix platform, because many actions are not yet automated. As a solution we developed JamOps, a tool that automates such repetitive actions.
To make the tool usable for parties outside JAM-IT, such as Gemeente Rotterdam, it had to be turned into a user-friendly application.
By automating processes, JamOps delivers faster innovation and improvement of software.
Since Gemeente Rotterdam implemented the tool, they have had a considerably shorter time to market when developing applications.
The tool prevents data leaks and other risks. The quality and security of the software are safeguarded by a range of automated tests.
All developers at Gemeente Rotterdam use JamOps when developing software. Because every task and project is handled by the same tool and with the same tests, a great many manual errors are prevented. That results in more control over the processes and greater security of the applications.
Using JamOps for Continuous Integration and Delivery helps improve the quality and reliability of your applications. By automating these processes, development teams can concentrate on writing code and new features while the tool does the rest of the work. That results in faster releases, fewer errors and higher customer satisfaction.
Developing an application involves a great many actions that have to be carried out over and over again. Think of deploying code to the different environments, and testing and checking the changes. That could be more efficient, we thought. So we developed JamOps, to automate and optimise these processes.
JAM-IT developed a Mendix application as a shell around the existing JamOps tool. For its functionality the application uses various web services. The tool automates a range of tasks in order to improve the quality, security and efficiency of application development.
First, JamOps makes Continuous Integration and Deployment possible. With Continuous Integration, new code is automatically tested and integrated into the latest version of the application. This process reduces the number of manual actions and prevents conflicts and bugs. If a test fails, the code is not integrated until the error has been corrected. That ensures only high-quality code is integrated into the application.
JamOps also makes Continuous Delivery possible, where changes are automatically pushed to the desired environment after testing. This process reduces the time needed to make new functionality available to end users. With Continuous Delivery, new features can be rolled out quickly and reliably, so users can start using them straight away.
Second, JamOps automates a number of maintenance activities. Starting with the Java dependencies; the tool makes sure the latest version of every component is in place and clears out duplicate versions. It also checks whether any certificates are due to expire soon and, if so, sends a reminder to the administrators. Finally, it optimises the export and import processes for Mendix modules in new projects.
Because the application is continuously processing multiple projects and tasks, it makes extensive use of queue implementation and multithreading. That way the time to market is optimised for every change in the code.
