Paint, coatings and printing ink are everywhere. From buildings and bridges to packaging and vehicles. Yet very few people stop to think about the role these products play in daily life. For the VVVF, that was exactly the challenge. How do you make visible what often stays invisible? How do you show what the industry contributes to society, particularly to people who do not deal with it every day?
The VVVF has represented the paint and printing ink industry in the Netherlands since 1907. With a compact team they work for the interests of the sector, with a strong focus on innovation, sustainability, safety and responsible use of raw materials.
Within the sector, development and quality play a big part. Products have to meet strict regulations and are continuously developed further in specialist laboratories. At the same time, the importance of sustainability and safe working with chemical substances keeps growing. The VVVF plays a connecting role in this between companies, government and other stakeholders.
The collaboration started from a fundamental question: what does the industry contribute to society? During an internal brainstorm, countless applications of paint, coatings and printing ink were gathered and worked out visually in an illustration. That first version gave insight, but remained limited to a static image.
The next step became clear: this visualisation had to come to life. The aim was not only to show where paint and coatings are used, but to make the story behind them accessible to a wider audience. Think of policymakers, stakeholders and the general public.
The interactive map is now actively used in the VVVF's communications:
For the VVVF this is only the beginning. Further extension of the interactive map is being considered. They are also looking at possibilities in the form of video material and additional content around themes such as sustainability.
Together with JAM-IT, the VVVF translated the question of how to make visible what often stays invisible into an interactive solution that puts the industry's story literally in the picture.
JAM-IT translated the existing illustration into an interactive map in which users can discover for themselves where and how paint, coatings and printing ink are used.
By adding different layers and interactive elements, a dynamic experience emerges. Users can navigate through the map and discover, element by element, what role the industry plays in specific applications. What makes this solution extra powerful is its flexibility. The interactive map is built so that it can easily be extended and adapted. The map is now available in several languages and can be used at European level. That takes the application beyond the original use case and makes it a broadly usable communication tool for the sector.
The collaboration started from a concrete idea and an existing visual basis. In short iterations we worked on translating the static illustration into an interactive environment.
Throughout this process there was constant alignment on usability, content and extensibility. The result is a solution that not only works technically, but also fits the message the VVVF wants to convey.
Thanks to the modular set-up, the map can easily be developed further, for example with extra content or new forms of visualisation.
The solution has also proved more broadly applicable than expected. Because it is scalable and multilingual, the map is interesting for use outside the Netherlands too.
The most important result: a complex story has been translated into a visual, accessible experience that is understood immediately.
This collaboration shows that technology can not only optimise processes, but also help tell stories better. By combining data and visualisation cleverly, you create insight, awareness and a stronger connection with the audience.
