Mendix 10 arrives in June: what can you expect?

The newest version of Mendix comes out in June: Mendix 10. What can you expect from this new version of Mendix? And what does it mean for you if you are currently on an older version of Mendix? You can read all about it in this article.

What we already know about Mendix 10

Mendix is constantly being developed and smaller updates appear regularly. Every 2 years Mendix releases what is known as a major release. A major release brings larger changes with it. In June it is time for another major release and Mendix 10 becomes available. Not much is known yet about exactly what will change. This is what we do know:

Git support

In the new version Mendix switches from Subversion (SVN) to Git for version control. SVN is older and more limited than Git, and Mendix sees Git as the future. Mendix is doing everything it can to make the switch to Git as easy as possible, among other things by announcing the change well in advance. Git has also been available as an option for older versions of Mendix for some time, and in Mendix 9.20 it is already the default. That gives you time to take the necessary steps now, without rushing.

What we expect (or hope)

So very little is known yet about what this new version of Mendix will bring. Of course we have our own ideas. Let us look into the crystal ball and make a few predictions.

A growing use of AI

In this version Mendix will no doubt add new features that make the development process easier and more efficient. Mendix 10 may well offer more ready-made templates and workflows. We expect AI to play a substantial part in that. AI could take over certain repetitive tasks, for example, or make suggestions for logic.

Mac support

We hope that in this version Mendix delivers on its promise to make the Mendix development environment available on Mac as well. That would make the platform even more accessible for developers. At the moment you can only use the Mendix development environment on Windows.

Should I move to Mendix 10?

If you are still on Mendix 7

Are you still using Mendix 7? Then it is very important that you move to a higher version soon. As soon as version 10 comes out, version 7 stops receiving updates. That creates security issues. In principle it is enough to upgrade to version 8 or 9, which makes the step a little smaller. We do recommend making the move to version 10 eventually, with intermediate steps if needed. Every version comes with new modules and features that make your developers' work easier and more efficient. You miss out on those if you stay on older versions.

If you are on Mendix 8 or 9

These versions continue to receive updates, but we still strongly recommend moving to version 10. In fact the idea is that you keep upgrading Mendix continuously, because the platform gets more powerful with every upgrade. Modules and features are added and the developer's job keeps getting easier. By upgrading, then, you make sure your developers achieve more in less time. It would be a shame to let that chance go.

What do I have to do if I want to make the move?

Have you kept up with updates lately and are you on a recent version of Mendix? Then upgrading to Mendix 10 will probably not take much time and will have little impact on your running applications. Are you still on an older version of Mendix? Then upgrading to version 10 may take rather more doing. Mendix has an upgrade guide that takes you through the upgrade process. Have the upgrade carried out by a specialist, so that you can be sure it goes well.
